Reaching and Teaching More Young People
Than Any Other Nature Center in Wisconsin

Welcome to another year of fun and learning at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Each year, the Center educates over 35,000 schoolchildren from the Milwaukee metropolitan area – many from urban schools.

The following brochures present a complete listing of classes for elementary, middle and high school students. These classes are categorized to reflect the specific Wisconsin Model academic Standards that are incorporated into each class offered.

Living Lightly

LIVING LIGHTLY

Living Lightly – Is an environmental education curriculum series published in three-ring binders. Each unit has teacher background information and student materials, interactive and interdisciplinary activities.

LIVING LIGHTLY IN THE CITY (Grades 4-6)

Living Lightly in the City was inspired by urban children and written for students in both suburban and urban communities. Both volumes contain activities and resource materials to help urban children bridge the gap between the world of nature and their own urban-centered environment.

This series covers a broad range of topics including land use, water resources, transportation, nature in the city and Native American philosophy. The materials help infuse environmental studies into the existing curriculum.

LIVING LIGHTLY ON THE PLANET (Grades 7-9 and 10-12)

Living Lightly on the Planet was designed to involve and motivate junior and senior high students. Resource materials such as maps, student role cards and case studies are included to enhance learning. As students become involved they gain knowledge of ecological processes and awareness of the impact of environmental problems on their own health and well-being.

Volume I (Grades 7-9) inspires students to discover some of our limits to growth as they explore global population concerns and delve into land use issues. Concerns at home are also emphasized including such problems as groundwater pollution.

Volume II (Grades 10-12) helps students apply knowledge of ecological concepts to human interaction with the land. Global concerns such as famine and rain forest conservation are presented in investigations that challenge students’ critical thinking. Students learn about the acid rain problem and the root of our hazardous waste dilemma or debate the nuclear power issue.
