Volunteer

Schlitz Audubon Nature Centers volunteers provide essential support for our day-to-day operations, and are a vital part of the Centers warm atmosphere and "can-do" land ethic. SANCs volunteers provide countless hours and invaluable support to our teachers and staff. They also work diligently with our land stewardship staff to help preserve and restore our 185-acre "outdoor classroom" and the site around our green building. Without our volunteers, the Center could not function. Whatever your particular interests or talents, we have a volunteer opportunity for you.

Volunteer benefits:

Besides discovering a little more about themselves, volunteers at the Center enjoy these benefits.
  • 20% discount at our nature store
  • free seasonal hikes
  • annual spring volunteer recognition dinner
  • member rate for events and classes
  • lots of thanks from grateful staff

Volunteers at SANC events:

Throughout the year, we have events big and small for you to get involved. Most event volunteering is for that day, although we have a few ideas on the burner that could use some extended prep time from committees. As usual, many students count their volunteer time here for clubs or school. Corporate groups of any size are welcome.

Preschool Pancake Breakfast

Earth Day

Summer Class Assistant

Ephemeral pond project

Halloween Hikes

There will be other events scheduled for the spring. Check back for more information.

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Here are the hottest areas for volunteering at the center!

Admissions booth attendant: Hang out at our cozy admissions booth in the parking lot while you collect cash admissions, hand out trail maps and answer questions. Don’t know it all? Refer visitors to the front desk, or to other sources. Shift is once a month either Saturday or Sunday, morning or afternoons. This is an important place for people to check in with the center as members or guests. Booth has electricity, and a ceiling fan or heat for the ever-changing Lake Michigan shore climate. Bring a book, Sudoku, knitting, or homework for company. Volunteers aged HS and above.

Preschool: Be a school year volunteer! Help our teachers inside the preschool classrooms and out on the trails. Our cuties are 3-5 years old, and they love silly jokes and finding frogs in the ponds. If you do too, we’d love to have you here from September to May once a week for a morning or afternoon. Volunteers HS and above.

Land Stewardship: Enjoy our beautiful outdoor sanctuary by helping the land stewards weed, plant, and remove invasive species all year long. The adults come Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9-noon. High school and college students, and some adults, come on Saturdays from 9:30-noon. We have many students come weekdays during school breaks and in the summer. This is a drop-in program, so please come when you are free. Dress for the morning Lake Michigan area weather, wearing pants, hiking or tennis shoes and layers. Bring reusable water bottle. And for Pete’s sake, eat breakfast before you come!
